Goodwill Easterseals provides staff and trains volunteers along with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to become tax preparers in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program in southwest Alabama and northwest Florida. Preparers help tax payers find out if they qualify for the EITC and other refundable tax credits. These volunteers also prepare and electronically file tax returns at no cost for families whose 2015 household income was $54,000 or less. We were honored to be joined today by Senator Bradley Byrne, Mayor Sandy Stimpson (Mobile), County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood (Mobile), United Way of Southwest Alabama Executive Director, Cliff Grimes, and members of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
Recently, Goodwill Easterseals was blessed to have been given the gift of NEATNESS from our new friend and professional organizer, Tess Fontaine. Tess drove all the way to our Airport Warehouse from Foley to help organize our space, which houses our Medical Assistance and Equipment Program. It was no easy feat – our program contains over 100 different categories of items, including wheelchairs, walkers, diabetic supplies, braces, and shower chairs, just to name a few, all available at no cost to anyone who needs it. “She is an ACE at organizing ANYTHING!” said GES staff member, Lydia Gaudet. “She did it beautifully. She kept coming back day after day until it was done, she carefully checked with staff to make sure they liked the placement, she found and used storage containers we already had available, saving us money, and she made so much extra space, she was able to install a workbench, which our staff leader loves! She even left us with an organization chart of where everything is, and a list for future volunteers of tasks to do to maintain the space.”
Check out our Kaleidoscope adult day program participants visiting Toomey’s to get ready for the MARC parade on February 4th! As always, visit one of our Goodwill Easterseals store locations to stock up on stuffed animals and other fun throws (find the store nearest you HERE). Happy Mardi Gras, everyone!

Lanny Wilson, long-time
employee of Goodwill Easterseals, has spent the last 32+ years playing many roles within our organization. No matter what position he was in, one thing always mattered to Lanny: the mission of Goodwill Easterseals. He has played such a big role in changing so many lives, and we are grateful to have had his service and leadership on our team for so many years. Today, he starts a new chapter in his life: retirement! Congratulations and many heartfelt thanks to Lanny from the entire GES family. We are better because of YOU.
